Galio Research vs Colwiz
Colwiz, the Oxford-born research management suite, is no longer available: the colwiz.com domain is parked, the last release shipped in May 2016, and Taylor & Francis acquired the team in 2017. If colwiz was your research home, your library needs a new one. Galio Research is a maintained, browser-based reference manager with PDF annotation, AI search, and your files on your own Google Drive.
Colwiz is gone. It was a genuinely good free tool in its day (web, desktop, and mobile apps, shared groups, an interactive PDF reader, 6,000+ citation styles), but the product has been frozen since 2016 and the site no longer serves it. If you still have colwiz data, export it as BibTeX or RIS now and move your library somewhere maintained. Galio Research runs in any browser on any operating system, with a built-in PDF reader, a searchable annotation manager, an integrated annotated bibliography, AI-powered annotation search, and storage on your own Google Drive, from $4/month after a 3-day free trial.
Colwiz did not fade because researchers stopped needing it. Here is what happened, and where Galio Research takes over.
The colwiz.com domain is parked: no site, no signup, no login. Whatever you had stored there is effectively stranded unless you kept local exports.
The last stable release, v3.16, shipped in May 2016. A decade of web evolution passed the product by, and the acquisition in 2017 sealed its direction.
Taylor & Francis bought colwiz in 2017 after partnering on its HTML5 PDF reader. The team and technology went into publisher projects; the standalone product was not the priority.
Colwiz powered ACS ChemWorx for the American Chemical Society and PDF readers for Royal Society Publishing and Taylor & Francis. Those integrations ended years ago.
The iOS and Android apps have not been updated in years and no longer connect reliably, leaving the mobile half of the colwiz promise broken.
If you exported libraries, synced folders, or kept the desktop app installed, you still own BibTeX, RIS, and PDF copies of your work. The urgent job is getting them into somewhere maintained.
Colwiz values are shown as the product stood at its end, for reference while you plan your migration.

We are a small team shipping improvements constantly. The gaps in the Galio column are exactly the kind of things we are working to close as the product grows.
Sign up in a minute and start working. No parked domains, no dead logins, no hoping the service comes back.
Reference management, a built-in PDF reader, shared projects, and formatted citations in 10,000+ styles, plus a central annotation manager and natural-language Smart Annotation Search that no 2016-era tool had.
Write how each paper relates to your work right next to the reference, then paraphrase it, manually or with AI, into manuscript-ready text.
Your PDFs live in your own Google Drive, not in a vendor's 2 GB silo. Whatever happens to any tool you use, your files stay yours.
Recreate your colwiz groups as shared projects: folders, tags, and one-paper-many-projects organization that keeps team libraries clean.
Export your references to standard formats any time. The colwiz lesson is that portability is the feature you only miss once it is gone.
To be fair to a tool that deserved a better end, here is what colwiz genuinely provided in its day:
A complete free tier. 5,000 references and 2 GB of PDF storage at no cost, expandable toward 30 GB by inviting colleagues.
Web, desktop, and mobile in 2013. A genuinely early cross-platform trio, synced in real time through the web app.
Groups with shared everything. Library, Drive, and discussion per group, years before "shared workspaces" became standard.
An innovative publisher PDF reader. The HTML5 interactive reader let researchers annotate papers directly on publishers' sites, built with Royal Society Publishing and Taylor & Francis.
We are always working towards helping researchers: deeper word-processor integration and offline access are the two gaps we hear about most, and there is a real possibility they get solved as Galio grows. Check back.
The clock matters more here than with a living tool. If you still hold colwiz data anywhere, this is the week to move it:
Salvage what you still hold. If any colwiz access or local data remains, export references as BibTeX or RIS and download your PDFs from its Drive immediately.
Gather your old exports. Check old machines, email attachments, and sync folders for BibTeX, RIS, and PDF copies from your colwiz era.
Upload your PDFs to Galio Research and connect your Google Drive for storage. Missing metadata is recoverable from DOIs and PDFs as you go.
Recreate your groups as shared projects, with folders and tags, and invite your former collaborators.
Export a Galio backup file once you are settled, and keep it with your other archives. Migration is easier the second time when you own the files.
